Hurun Germany Unicorn Index 2026
Europe's Deep-Tech Engine Finds Its Ambition
Germany minted eleven new unicorns in a single year — one every five weeks, the largest cohort in its history — taking the index to 37 unicorns worth €116.5 billion, fifth in the world and the undisputed leader of continental Europe. The Hurun Germany Unicorn Index 2026 is the definitive ranking of the country's billion-dollar startups, profiling every unicorn, every founder and every graduate — and asking the two questions that will define the next decade: why German-born founders abroad have built more than three times the value of the home list, and whether Germany can close the late-stage capital gap that keeps pushing them there.
-
37 — active unicorns (+40% year-on-year)
-
€116.5bn — total value (+35%)
-
11 — new entrants, a record cohort worth €29.4bn
-
5th — in the world, behind the US, China, the UK and India
-
2 — decacorns: Helsing (€16.6bn) and Trade Republic (€13.8bn)
-
50,000+ — direct jobs (100,000+ indirect)
The year the Zeitenwende reached the startup scene
Four years after Chancellor Olaf Scholz declared the Zeitenwende, defence technology has moved from taboo to Germany's most dynamic startup sector — four defence and aerospace unicorns worth €25.1 billion. Helsing, valued at €16.6 billion after adding €11.6 billion in a single year (the largest gain in German unicorn history), now competes with America's Anduril. STARK Defence and Quantum Systems — both founded by the same entrepreneur, Florian Seibel — entered the index simultaneously, and Isar Aerospace is building rockets for European satellites.
The AI sector is equally striking: five pure-AI unicorns worth over €25 billion. Black Forest Labs, founded in Freiburg in 2024 by the team behind Stable Diffusion, is proof Europe has not lost the generative AI race; DeepL and Parloa are global competitors in translation and conversational AI; and n8n, the Berlin workflow-automation platform, re-rated from unicorn to €4.8 billion within a year, backed by OpenAI, Microsoft, NVIDIA and Jeff Bezos. A new industrial category arrived too: robotics, led by NEURA Robotics (€6.4bn) — building 6,000 humanoid robots in 2026 from Metzingen, a town of 22,000 people better known for Hugo Boss.
The Top 10
Beyond Berlin and Munich
Berlin's 18 unicorns and Munich's seven anchor the map — but the geography of the other twelve is the surprise: Metzingen, Freiburg, Cologne, Chemnitz, Mannheim, Alzenau and Solingen all host billion-dollar companies. With 13 unicorn cities against France's five, German unicorns can be built anywhere there is world-class research, technical talent and patient capital.
Who builds them
The average German unicorn founder was 34 at founding — older than their French (32) and American peers — degree-complete, often with a PhD, and deep in one domain. 40% of Germany's unicorns have at least one non-German founder, making the country a genuine talent magnet. The founder factories are the technical universities — TUM, LMU, TU Berlin — and the research institutes: Max Planck and Fraunhofer are the R&D labs of Germany's future unicorns. The model is slower, deeper, more patient — and the companies it produces are built to last.
The graduates, graded on the German scale
Germany's listed tech champions get a school report: BioNTech (€22.7bn — changed the world from Mainz), Symrise and Zalando earn top marks (1.0); Delivery Hero, SUSE, TeamViewer, HelloFresh and five others earn respectable 2.0s. The whole listed class is worth €57 billion — proof that German tech can survive public-market scrutiny. But no German unicorn has yet listed in Frankfurt, and the report's verdict on the hundred-billion question is honest: a way off — but no longer unthinkable.
The diaspora ledger
The uncomfortable number of the report: German-born founders abroad have built more value than the entire home list. Palantir alone — co-founded by German-born Peter Thiel and worth over US$300 billion — is worth more than twice all 37 German unicorns combined. Arista, Shopify's German-built infrastructure, and a herd of US-anchored SaaS companies complete the parallel index. Germany produces the founders; America keeps the companies.
The gaps, honestly stated
This report does not flinch: fewer than 5% of German unicorn founders are women; domestic investors participate in fewer than 15% of late-stage rounds; Celonis has been re-priced from €12.0 billion to €6.6 billion and N26 stands at €2.8 billion against a €7.5 billion peak. The scale-up gap — growth capital that is not German — is the ecosystem's single biggest vulnerability.
What needs to happen
The report closes with ten policy recommendations — from mobilising pension-fund capital into venture to making Frankfurt listable and closing the female-founder gap — and a public scorecard the Hurun Research Institute will re-grade every year: 50 unicorns by 2030, and 100 by 2032, if Germany fixes late-stage capital, the listing pipeline and the gender gap.
"Germany's unicorn ecosystem is entering a new phase. Helsing is competing with Anduril. Black Forest Labs is competing with OpenAI. Trade Republic is competing with Robinhood. NEURA Robotics is building Germany's answer to Tesla Optimus. These are not German champions in a protected market — these are global competitors on the world stage. The Zeitenwende has done more than change defence policy. It has changed the psychology of German entrepreneurship."
