Hurun France Unicorn Index 2026

French Tech Takes Off!

France set itself a target of 25 unicorns by 2025 — and delivered 36, worth €88 billion, sixth in the world and, with Germany, the twin engine of the EU's unicorn economy. The Hurun France Unicorn Index 2026 is the definitive ranking of the country's billion-dollar startups, profiling every unicorn, every founder and every graduate — and asking the question that will define the next decade: France has proven it can build champions; can it keep them?

  • 36 — active unicorns, eleven above the Élysée's target

  • €88bn — total value ($96bn)

  • 10 — new faces, incl. 5 minted in 2026 alone

  • 6th — in the world, behind the US, China, the UK and India

  • 1st — decacorn: Mistral AI at €11.7bn

  • 33,000 — jobs worldwide, 20,000+ in France

The year French tech took off

Never in French tech history has so much value been created — and traded — in so short a window. Mistral AI, founded in 2023, became continental Europe's first decacorn outside the UK at €11.7 billion, adding €5.8 billion in a single year — the largest gain in French unicorn history — and is reported to be finalising a €3 billion Series D at €20 billion. AMI Labs, founded by Yann LeCun, raised a $1.03 billion seed round in March 2026, the largest seed in European history. Harmattan AI became France's first defence unicorn, backed by Dassault Aviation, barely two years after founding. Pasqal, France's first quantum unicorn, listed on the Nasdaq on 28 August 2026 — within five months of entering the index. And NVIDIA agreed to acquire Hugging Face, built by three French founders in New York, for $12.9 billion — the largest-ever sale of a French-founded AI company.

The Top 10

The jobs behind the valuations

The 36 unicorns employ approximately 33,000 people — more than 20,000 of them in France — and generate combined revenues above €8.5 billion. At least twelve are already profitable, among them Veepee, Voodoo, BlaBlaCar, Doctolib, Ivalua and Brevo. Their biggest contribution to the French state today is not corporate tax but roughly €500 million a year in employer social contributions: jobs first, profits second, taxes third.

A Paris story — with four exceptions

32 of the 36 unicorns are headquartered in Paris — a concentration exceeding even London's dominance of the UK — built on Station F, the grandes écoles and the AI cluster around Meta's FAIR lab. The four exceptions prove the regional model: Verkor (Grenoble), Exotec (Lille), Septeo (Montpellier) and Pasqal on the Saclay plateau.

Who builds them

The 106 founders were on average 32 when they started (44 today); 57% had already built a company. École Polytechnique alone produced 23 of them — more than any institution in Europe. The gaps are stated honestly: only 5 of the 106 founders are women (4.7%), and only 7 were born outside France — far below peer ecosystems.

The graduates, graded on the French scale

France's listed and sold champions get a school report on the /20 scale: Neoen earns 16 — Très Bien (taken private by Brookfield at €6.1 billion); Pasqal 16 on debut; OVHcloud, VusionGroup, Exclusive Networks, Nanobiotix and Believe earn Bien. But the pattern is the warning: Neoen, Exclusive Networks, Believe and Talend — four of the best graduates — were all bought off the board within seven years of listing. Of Europe's post-2000 companies still listed above $5 billion, France's only entry is Datadog — built in New York.

The diaspora ledger

French-born founders abroad have built businesses worth more than $300 billion — over three times the domestic herd. Snowflake (~$124bn) is alone worth more than all 36 home-grown unicorns combined; Datadog (~$87bn), Deel ($17.3bn) and Hugging Face complete a parallel index that is the counterfactual every national ranking ignores.

What needs to happen

Act I of the startup nation — creating unicorns — has succeeded. Act II is keeping them. The report closes with ten policy recommendations — doubling the Tibi Initiative toward €15 billion, making Euronext Paris listable, taxing employee equity at sale, defence procurement at startup speed, 10,000 AI talent visas, three regional Station Fs — and a public scorecard re-graded every year: 50 unicorns by 2029.

"What strikes us about France in 2026 is not the count of unicorns but the speed: a decacorn in three years, a defence unicorn in under two, a billion-dollar seed before shipping a product, and a Nasdaq listing within weeks of entering the index. Whether France can keep those champions — their ownership, their listings, their founders — is the open question of the next decade."

Methodology

The Hurun Unicorns Index and Future Unicorns Global Gazelles Index and Future Unicorns Global Cheetahs Index were compiled by the Hurun Research Institute.

Hurun Research defines a Unicorn as a start-up founded in the 2000s, not yet listed on a public exchange and worth US$1 billion.  A Hurun Gazelle is most likely, in our opinion, to reach a valuation of US$1 billion – i.e. ‘go unicorn’ – in the next three years, whilst a Hurun Cheetah is expected to ‘go unicorn’ within five years.

Hurun Gazelles have an average valuation of US$700 million and are mostly growing at an annual rate of about 20%. Hurun Cheetahs have an average valuation of US$400 million, and are mostly growing at an average rate of 25%.

Many of the world’s top investment houses provided details of their portfolio, which Hurun Research cross-checked against specialised investment databases, industry experts, media sources, and Hurun Unicorns, Gazelles & Cheetahs co-founders.

Valuing these Hurun Unicorns and Future Unicorns can be tricky. The very nature of these super-fast-growing companies makes valuations hard to pin down. Still, to ensure consistency of the valuations, the Hurun research team used the most recent valuation based on a sizeable round. It becomes harder when a startup is underperforming or on its way down since it is unlikely to have a new round of investment at a valuation lower than the previous round. In this case, Hurun used industry comparatives to ascertain a new lower valuation.

Countries and cities are ranked according to the head office.

Startups leave the Hurun Unicorns & Future Unicorns either by being ‘promoted’ or ‘demoted’.  Promotions are achieved when a Unicorn becomes a listed company or is acquired.  For Gazelles and Cheetahs, it is when they are promoted to become a Unicorn, Gazelle (in the case of Cheetahs), listing on a public exchange (IPO), or being acquired. Demotions are when Hurun Research believes they will no longer become a unicorn within three years for Gazelles and five years for Cheetahs.

Hurun Research has been tracking Unicorns since 2017, Gazelles since 2019 and Cheetahs since 2020.
